Sat Number/Name
Sat Numbers
All satoshis are numbered in the order they were mined, going back to the genesis block. The first satoshi in the first block mined in 2009 is sat 0 and every sat thereafter are chronologically numbered by creation date.
Because 100,000,000 satoshis make up a bitcoin, most sat numbers are very long. The first block that contained sat 0 contained 5 billion sats (50 BTC x 100M sats) so therefore the final sat in the genesis block was sat 4999999999. With a new block every ~10 minutes since the genesis block, the size of new sat numbers has continued to increase at a fast rate.
Sat Names
Every sat also has a name that corresponds to the number. To prevent unspendable bitcoin from early blocks from having shorter names, sat names get shorter the greater the sat number.
Some examples of sat names:
Sat 0's name is "nvtdijuwxlp"
Sat 2,099,844,443,139,324's name is "singular" and is expected to be mined in May, 2063
The last sat to ever be created, 2,099,999,997,689,999, will have the name "a". It is expected to be mined in February, 2140
As you might have guessed, this means sat names can spell words, contain names, and more. Tools like ord.io allow you to search for sat names to see if it exists and who owns it, or when it is expected to be mined.
